Lady Gaga Rules Billboard.com's Readers Poll 2013

Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande also scored major wins, but Gaga was the Billboard.com readers' MVP.

Put your hands up, make 'em touch: Lady Gaga is the ruler of Billboard.com's 2013 Readers' Poll, which allowed pop music fans far and wide to vote for their favorite albums, songs, videos and performances of the past year. Gaga, who returned in late 2013 with her "ARTPOP" opus, emerged in a superstar-laden field and claimed the poll's top prize: the 2013 MVP.

However, the MVP award was just the start for Gaga. "ARTPOP" was voted the readers' favorite album to top the Billboard 200 chart in 2013, while the official clip for "Applause" ran away with the Favorite Music Video category. Gaga's two-song stop on "Saturday Night Live" last month was voted the Favorite TV Performance of the year, and the singer blew away the competition in the Fashion category. And although "Lady Gaga Cancels Tour Dates Due To Injury" won the Biggest Disappointment award, that win just demonstrates how eager fans remain to see Gaga live -- her next tour was voted the most anticipated event of 2014.

2013 was a huge year for Gaga in the Readers' Poll, but Miley Cyrus wasn't too far behind the "Do What U Want" singer. "Wrecking Ball," Cyrus' first No. 1 single on the Hot 100 chart, was voted the best Hot 100 chart-topper of the year, and Cyrus' "Bangerz" career revival was voted the Comeback of the Year. Cyrus' twerk-happy VMAs performance was voted the Most Shocking Moment in music of 2013, and the "Wrecking Ball" online parodies won the vote for the Best Viral moment of the year.
Some other winners of note: just like in our mid-year poll, Ariana Grande ran away with the Newcomer of the Year vote, overcoming fellow newbies Imagine Dragons and Lorde in the vote. Taylor Swift's international Red run was voted the Favorite Tour of the year, while Lollapalooza and "The X Factor" won for the year's best festival and musical TV show, respectively. And although we had to remove Beyonce from one of our categories -- "Beyonce Does Not Release An Album in 2013" certainly still can't be an option in the Biggest Disappointment vote! -- Queen Bey gave the Festival Performance of the year at Made In America, while she and Jay Z were voted the Hottest Couple of 2013.
Check out the full results below -- including the percentage of the votes that each candidate received:

Analysis: How Lady Gaga, Katy Perry And Rihanna Came To Dominate Top 40 Radio

A pure pop boom coincides with the Pop Songs radio airplay chart's two-decade anniversary.

Happy birthday, Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs chart! Two decades in, the ranking continues to track the trends at, and reveal the realities of, U.S. mainstream top 40 radio.

The chart's 20th anniversary - it launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992 - also coincides with an unprecedented pure pop boom, as mainstream top 40 radio is playing more pure pop than ever before. And, as station ratings soar, such a focus on the format's musical middle ground is reinforcing that the format works best when deemphasizing such extremes as rock and rap.

A year-by-year analysis of Billboard's Pop Songs chart reveals that pure pop - i.e., melodic, often synth-driven, uptempo fare from the likes of Kelly ClarksonLady Gaga and Katy Perry - has made up at least 60% of the survey's total top 10 hits each year from 2008 through 2012 (from January through July annually). Last year, the style accounted for a whopping 79% of the list's top 10s - the highest percentage in the chart's history - as 30 of the 38 top 10s during that period fit a pop classification.

This week, Chart Beat is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart.

Today, Oct. 2: Analysis: How Lady Gaga, Katy Perry And Rihanna Came To Dominate Top 40 Radio

Tomorrow, Oct. 3: The Top 100 Pop Songs 1992-2012, From No. 100 To No. 1

Thursday, Oct. 4: The Top 40 Pop Artists 1992-2012, From No. 40 To No. 1

What's behind the pure pop boom? It's no coincidence that 2008 marked the arrival of two of the format's reigning stars: Perry and Gaga. Rihanna, meanwhile, continued to solidify her star status as an almost constant chart staple, adding touches of R&B and reggae to her overall pop focus. Add the continued domination or resurgences in that span of such acts asChristina Aguilera, Clarkson, Maroon 5 (which, in recent years, has segued from rock to a more pop lean), P!nk and Britney Spears, and it's clear that pop became tops at mainstream top 40 radio.

In turn, ratings have reflected that audiences' appetites for pop are robust. CBS Radio flipped KAMP Los Angeles and WXRK New York to mainstream top 40 in 2009, taking on respective Clear Channel Media and Entertainment-owned format leaders KIIS and WHTZ. In Arbitron's August 2012 ratings among listeners ages 6 and older, KIIS led all Los Angeles stations with a 5.5 share, while KAMP pulled a 3.8 share. In New York in August, WHTZ registered a 6.1 share, while WXRK scored a 2.4 showing.

Similar battles brew in other large markets. In Detroit and Boston, CBS Radio has likewise switched WDZH (also in 2009) and WODS (two months ago) to mainstream top 40, again challenging established Clear Channel-owned format outlets WKQI and WXKS, respectively.

Programmers' adherence to, and the availability of, pure pop music at the format has ebbed and flowed since Billboard premiered Pop Songs, born of then-new BDS electronic monitoring technology, 20 years ago. (Ironically, given its title, Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" led the inaugural list. Current No. 1 "One More Night" by Maroon 5 is the chart's 252nd topper.)

While pure pop has comprised more than 60% of all Pop Songs top 10s each year since 2008, the sound encompassed just 41% in 1993, when R&B from the likes of Whitney HoustonJanet Jackson and TLC infused format playlists.

In 1996, pop accounted for just 19% of all top 10s, as such rock/alternative acts as Gin BlossomsHootie & the Blowfish and Alanis Morissette became the format's - and the public's - flavor of choice.

And, in 2003, pop's percentage rose to 45%, but the amount of rap top 10s doubled to 12 from the previous year, too. The heyday of 50 Cent, Diddy and Eminem at pop radio contrasted with 1993-2002, when no more than one rap title reached the top 10 annually.

Since 2008, however, Rihanna has reigned with 15 more top 10s after "Umbrella," Gaga's implored us to just dance (while racking seven Pop Songs No. 1s) and Perry's tallied a record six Pop Songs No. 1s from one album ("Teenage Dream"). And, she, um, kissed a girl. Clearly, we've liked it all.

According to Edison Research VP of music and programming Sean Ross, several factors have aligned to make for a current pinnacle for pop music. "There's less competition. R&B/hip-hop and alternative don't have the [ratings] influence that they used to, or, thus, the same ability to force songs on top 40's agenda. Only country has a similar ability to break new music and it's still viewed by most pop PDs as another sphere."

Ross adds that mainstream top 40 has learned to cultivate its own versions of rock and R&B-influenced pop, allowing the format to sample variety without risking playing extremes. In recent years, he notes, the format largely replaced hip-hop with rhythmic pop from such acts as theBlack Eyed Peas. Teen punk similarly usurped alternative at top 40, thanks to the rise of bands like the All-American Rejects. "Plus, R&B acts like Chris Brown and Usher are releasing exclusive pop singles for top 40 while saving their core R&B singles for that format," says Ross (who served as Billboard's radio editor in 1988-92).

While the names have changed - Peter Cetera, En Vogue, Guns N' Roses, Elton John and Toad the Wet Sprocket inhabited the maiden Pop Songs chart; Miley Cyrus wasn't born until a month after the list's launch;Justin Bieber, a year and a half later - the survey continues to help guide pop programmers' decisions. "The Pop Songs chart came along at point when country and hip-hop were competing heavily with the format," Ross recalls. "It gave mainstream top 40 PDs their own chart to look at.

Britney Spears Gets Rainbow Hair Extensions: Love It or Hate It?

Things are looking bright for X Factor judge Britney Spears -- literally!

The "Oops!...I Did It Again" pop star, 30, rocked pink and blue hair extensions when she joined Ryan Seacrest, 37, on stage during the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas September 21. Spears showed off her trim figure in a black mini-dress by David Lerner and glitter platform heels by Charlotte Olympia.

"Hello, Las Vegas!" a beaming Spears said on stage. "You know why I love this festival. It's packed with every kind of music fan." (Performers included Jason AldeanRihanna and Bon Jovi, among others.)

Spears added, "This is Vegas, baby, so we've got the world's most insane deejays here to keep the party going all night long."

Though Spears only recently decided to experiment with a more colorful 'do, fellow X Factor judge Demi Lovato, 20, rocked rainbow hairstyles throughout the show's nationwide talent auditions this summer. The two musicians joined veteran judges Simon Cowell, 52, and L.A. Reid, 56, on the FOX hit, which airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.

Glee Recap: It's Britney...Again!

Glee Britney
If we didn't start this recap with a clever yet slightly cheesy Britney Spears reference would you hold it against us? (See what we did there?!)
Following another glorious hour with Britney on The X FactorGlee tackled their second tribute episode in the pop princess' honor. And while we're still pretty upset that the Fox hit ignored our favorite tune of Brit's yet again ("Email My Heart" 4eva!), "Britney 2.0" gave us some pretty awesome covers of the pop princess, including "Gimme More" and "Oops...I Did It Again."
Oh, and the episode gave us our first (small) doses of Santana (Naya Rivera), Emma(Jayma Mays) and Puck (Mark Salling) of the season!
WHAT WE LEARNED:
The Rise and Fall of Brittany: While Brittany (Heather Morris) starts off the hour on top of the world (or, you know, like Jesus in the North Pole), things get rough for our one-liner machine after Sue (Jane Lynch) revokes her Head Cheerio title (And her high pony. Gasp!), giving the position to resident new bitch Kitty (Becca Tobin). Why? Because Brit managed to get an impressive F- on a test, drawing a crayon-scape of Happyville, where math was never invented and Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele) are in heaven, instead of answering any questions.
Between that and losing Santana to her cheerleading duties, Brittany has let herself go. Sporting an unironic t-shirt, a bacon addiction and cat troubles (Lord Tubbington has joined a gang), she's basically turned into June from Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Cue intervention from Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison), who makes this week's lesson "Britney 2.0" to lift Brittany's spirit.
The lesson doesn't go so well—instead of getting better, Brittany relives all of Britney's 2007 behavior (tries to shave her head, beats Jacob Israel up with an umbrella, inspires a fan to cry-defend her, develops a Cheetos addiction, etc.) in the span of five minutes.
Oh, but it gets worse. She then persuades the club (with some help from Kiki, Siri's jealous cousin) to let her lip-synch during the pep rally, leading to a re-enactment of Britney's now-infamous performance of "Gimme More" at the 2007 MTV VMAs. Of course, she's caught and jeopardizes the Glee club's future.
When Brittany resigns from New Directions, Sam (Chord Overstreet), our sweet, sweet angel Sam, realizes what she's doing: staging an epic breakdown, so she can have an even more epic comeback, just like her idol. And just like that, Brittany rises like a Phoenix from the ashes, getting a C- on her test (she used English!), properly identifying President Barack Obama (sorry, George Washington!) and getting back on the Cheerios.
As for Brittana, Santana makes her first (very quick) appearance of the season via Skype, but has to head to cheerleading practice. It's clear Brittany misses her (longingly staring at your computer, waiting for your girlfriend to sign on is the 2012 version of willing your crush to sign onto AIM and message you saying "SUP?"), but at least she has a new BFF in Sam. (Two Blondes, One Brain is basically their friendship motto.)
Rachel Gets Berry Sexy: First, let us quickly gush over how much we are already loving Rachel and Kurt as roommates in Bushwick and want to move in with them immediately. So. Freaking. Cute. OK, moving on: After being left out of a tango lesson by Cassandra (Kate Hudson) because she doesn't have any sex appeal, Rachel turns to the pretty sexy Brody (Dean Geyer) for help proving her wrong, which means they "table-hump" to "Oops...I Did It Again." (Pretty sure that's a TV first.)
Alas, Cassie isn't impressed, prompting Rachel to lose her cool and throw Cassie's big Broadway blunder in her beautiful face. Turns out, back in her Broadway days, Cassie infamously attacked a man who dared to answer his cell phone during her performance. Rachel's outburst doesn't end much better: She's kicked out of the class. But not for long! When Rachel apologizes, the super-flexible (seriously, damn!) Cassie explains that she's mean because Broadway is even meaner and she wants to prepare her students for what she wasn't equipped to handle ten years ago.
Before the paint even finishes drying on the heart with Finn's name in it Rachel painted on her brick wall, Brody  stops by. Turns out, he took a 45-minute train ride just to give her an orchard.  "I really liked dancing with you. And I think that you're really sexy," Brody says before trying to kiss her. Keyword: try. Rachel gently turns him down, but he proves to be persistent, telling her that whenever they hang out, "I'm thinking of kissing you." (Ooh, he'sgood.) But we can't help but think of Cassie's comment about his liking of "ingĂ©nues." Color us curious yet hesitant. And it seems Rachel is, too, as she paints over Finn's name on her wall. (Keep calm and Tumblr your despair, Finchel fans.)
Jarley Is On: Though Unique (Alex Newell) warns her that Jake (Jacob Artist) is a womanizer, Marley (Melissa Benoist) can't help but find herself drawn to the younger, slightly less badder Puckerman brother. (He rides a scooter, so we detracted major bad boy points there.) The two share a sweet moment on the bleachers and perform a swoon-worthy mash-up of "Drive Me Crazy" and Aerosmith's "Crazy." And when Jake gives her his leather jacket, it's clear Marley is head over heels.
Jake proves to be a good guy when he stands up to Kitty's two nameless henchmen after they rag on Marley and her lunch-lady mother. Will steps in and rather than give Jake another lecture that will fall on deaf ears, he brings in the big gun: Puck! Yes, Will dropped the brother-bomb on Puck, but he wasn't too surprised and gave Jake some tough love and the push he needed to finally join glee club. As for Puck, he's back to Los Angeles for a hot date with a former Bachelor contestant aka livin' his dream.
Alas, it wasn't exactly a happy ending (come on, it's only the second episode of the season), as Marley learns Jake is dating Kitty. We get taking baby steps to Jake and Marley's eventual relationship, but this felt a little too contrived for us. Just sayin'.
ONE-LINERS
"Yesterday I caught one of them trying to marry a squirrel."—Sue, on Brittany's negative influence on the Cheerios
"Think we can scissor-Skype later?"—Brittany, to Santana during their quick Skype date.
"Sorry, I'm late. Someone stole my compass." —Brittany, to Will and Emma, who makes her first appearance of the season trying to help Brittany out of her funk (and the grotsky clothes, too)
"New York Domino's is so much better than Lima's Domino's."—Rachel, who clearly needs to explore New York City. ASAP.
"Maria von Trapp, Willy Loman, Shrek, those are the roles that are appropriate for your level of sex appeal."—Cassie, on Rachel's performance
"You think you're a badass, I'm the original badass. I had my first threesome at 7 and once beat up a police horse."—Puck

Britney Spears KILLS IT On The Cover Of ELLE Magazine (PHOTO)

Britney Elle Magazine
Britney Spears likes to put it all on the line all for the sake of love – just ask Jason Trawick.
In a new interview with Elle Magazine, the X Factor judge, 30, and her former-manager-turned-fiancĂ© Trawick, 39, open up in a joint talk about how Spear’s rather bold moves helped turned their friendship into a romance.
"It was kind of one of those things where she moved, like, turned around, so we were face-to-face and then…," Trawick says.
To stop her soon-to-be hubby from dishing too much information, Spears interrupts him.
"Okay, that's enough information, sweetie," she says. "It was sweet, just say that."
The I Wanna Go singer and mother-of-two to Sean Preston, 6, and Jayden James, 5, got engaged to Trawick in December 2010, but have yet to set a date for their big day.

The I Wanna Go singer and mother-of-two to Sean Preston, 6, and Jayden James, 5, got engaged to Trawick in December 2010, but have yet to set a date for their big day.
Spears "sometimes feels Jason's more of a mentor than a husband," a source tells the magazine. (In April, Trawick was named a co-conservator over her personal affairs, along with her father, Jamie Spears.)
The songbird was first wed in Las Vegas to her friend Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004 (the union was annulled), and later that year, Spears married Kevin Federline who became the father of her children.

Britney Spears Opens Up About 'X Factor' Fears

Britney Spears
Britney Spears seems to have come into her own this year, but the mom of two and soon-to-be newlywed reveals she's not as put together as she appears to be.
While we're still a few days away from seeing the pop star in action as an X Factor judge, talk of Spears' odd behavior and spontaneous breaks during filming of the show had many speculating the 30-year-old singer was not yet ready to hit the spotlight following a few rough years. Although she doesn't venture to comment on rumors she is breaking under the pressure of her duties on the show, Spears conceded to being "extremely nervous" on the first day of auditions in October's issue of ELLEmagazine.
"I was having panic attack after panic attack," she admitted.
In particular, Spears reveals that breaking the hearts of auditioning youngsters was at the forefront of her fears, but says she "quickly" got over it. "[I] realized that I was helping them by being honest."
Show creator and co-judge Simon Cowell was quick to jump to her defense when asked about her "wobbly" beginning. "On the first day, one hundred percent she didn't think she was going to be able to do this. It's the Roman Colosseum—five thousand people booing if you say no. But I'm seeing this woman blossom week by week doing this. I think she's going to be good for the show, and I think the show is going to be good for her."
As for another aspect of Spears' life that's come to blossom in recent months—her relationship with fiancĂ© Jason Trawick—the notoriously private star and her husband-to-be lent some insight into the couple's romantic beginnings.
"It was kind of one of those things where she moved, like, turned around, so we were face-to-face, " revealed Trawick of the moment Spears made the first move on him during a screening "one of the Chucky movies" in Las Vegas.
When he began to detail more of their transition from friends to lovers, she was quick to stop him from revealing anything juicy.
"Okay, that's enough information, sweetie," Spears interrupted. "It was sweet, just say that."
You can read more of this interview and see the complete photo spread of Spears and Trawick inELLE magazine when the October issue hits newsstands September 18.

Pop Stars In Nude Bodysuits: Trend Or Foe?

Is she naked onstage? No, it's just another double-taking nude bodysuit! At the 2000 MTV VMAs, a 19-year-old Britney Spears shocked audiences when she stripped off her clothes to reveal little more than rhinestones and nude fabric. (Admit it, it took you a good few moments to realize there was fabric). Now, more than a decade after Britney's wardrobe trickery, the nude bodysuit has returned full-force on the pop star scene. Are these new renditions of Spears's VMAs look a pop trend or pop foe?

Britney Spears Nude Body
Behold, the original sparkly nude look! Britney Spears sizzled the rhinestones off her incredible body with an unbelievably sexy performance of "Oops...I Did It Again" at the 2000 MTV VMAs, proving once and for all that the bubblegum singer was "not that innocent."

Pink Nude Body
A decade after Britney Spears's VMAs outfit shocker, Pink flaunted her Olympics-worthy body in a look that mated Britney's nude VMAs getup and Cher's "Turn Back Time" barely-there electrician's tape outfit for her death-defying, aerial performance at the 2010 Grammys. Again, rhinestones seem to be the only thing keeping the singer from being completely exposed, but given the gymnastic emphasis of her act, a skin-tight bodysuit was a must!...

Jennifer Lopez Nude Body
Singer Jennifer Lopez bedazzled her unmentionables at the 2011 American Music Awards, thus garnering immediate comparisons to Spears's look. Britney and Pink at least had straps and/or flared pants to make their outfit look more, well, there, but Lopez's outfit left very little to the imagination.

Mel B nude body
Mel B of the Spice Girls was slightly more covered-up than previous nude bodysuits, rocking one that had a more even, less "strategic" spattering of sequins at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony

Jessie J nude body
Here's a two-fer! British pop star Jessie J rocked not one, but two nude bodysuits at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony in London. Probably the most "covered" of all the bodysuit-flaunters here, the singer started with a nude leotard adorned with black flowers, then moved on to a bodysuit that was half nude fabric and half nude-tinted sequins

Katy Perry Nude Body
And now for the nudest of the nude suits! Katy Perry was caught off-guard when she won an award at Canada's 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards immediately after her performance, with no time for an outfit change. The singer quipped that had she known she'd win, she would've worn more clothes! Ironically, her award statue looked like a black censor bar, and Katy appropriately used it to cover her behind as she scurried offstage!

Britney Spears Criminal Lyrics And Official Video

"Criminal"
[Verse 1:]
He is a hustler, he's no good at all
He is a loser, he's a bum, bum, bum, bum
He lies, he bluffs, he's unreliable
He is a sucker with a gun, gun, gun, gun
I know you told me I should stay away
I know you said he's just a dog astray
He is a bad boy with a tainted heart
And even I know this ain't smart

[Chorus:]
But mama I'm in love with a criminal
And this type of love isn't rational, it's physical
Mama please don't cry, I will be alright
All reason aside I just can't deny, love the guy

[Verse 2:]
He is a villain by the devil's law
He is a killer just for fun, fun, fun, fun
That man's a snitch and unpredictable
He's got no conscience, he got none, none, none, none
Oh-aaall I know, should've let go, but no
'Cause he is a bad boy with a tainted heart
And even I know this ain't smart

[Chorus:]
But mama I'm in love with a criminal
And this type of love isn't rational, it's physical
Mama please don't cry, I will be alright
All reason aside I just can't deny, love the guy

[Bridge:]
And he's got my name
Tattooed on his arm
His lucky charm
So I guess it's OK
He's with me
And I hear people talk (people talk)
Try to make remarks
Keep us apart
But I don't even hear
I don't care

[Chorus:]
'Cause mama I'm in love with a criminal
And this type of love isn't rational, it's physical
Mama please don't cry, I will be alright
All reason aside I just can't deny, I love the guy

(Oh-aaall I know)
Mama I'm in love with a criminal
(Should've let go)
And this type of love isn't rational,
(But no)
It's physical
(Oh-aaall I know)
Mama please don't cry, I will be alright
(Should've let go)
All reason aside
(But no)
I just can't deny, love the guy
