Lady Gaga Rules Billboard.com's Readers Poll 2013

Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande also scored major wins, but Gaga was the Billboard.com readers' MVP.

Put your hands up, make 'em touch: Lady Gaga is the ruler of Billboard.com's 2013 Readers' Poll, which allowed pop music fans far and wide to vote for their favorite albums, songs, videos and performances of the past year. Gaga, who returned in late 2013 with her "ARTPOP" opus, emerged in a superstar-laden field and claimed the poll's top prize: the 2013 MVP.

However, the MVP award was just the start for Gaga. "ARTPOP" was voted the readers' favorite album to top the Billboard 200 chart in 2013, while the official clip for "Applause" ran away with the Favorite Music Video category. Gaga's two-song stop on "Saturday Night Live" last month was voted the Favorite TV Performance of the year, and the singer blew away the competition in the Fashion category. And although "Lady Gaga Cancels Tour Dates Due To Injury" won the Biggest Disappointment award, that win just demonstrates how eager fans remain to see Gaga live -- her next tour was voted the most anticipated event of 2014.

2013 was a huge year for Gaga in the Readers' Poll, but Miley Cyrus wasn't too far behind the "Do What U Want" singer. "Wrecking Ball," Cyrus' first No. 1 single on the Hot 100 chart, was voted the best Hot 100 chart-topper of the year, and Cyrus' "Bangerz" career revival was voted the Comeback of the Year. Cyrus' twerk-happy VMAs performance was voted the Most Shocking Moment in music of 2013, and the "Wrecking Ball" online parodies won the vote for the Best Viral moment of the year.
Some other winners of note: just like in our mid-year poll, Ariana Grande ran away with the Newcomer of the Year vote, overcoming fellow newbies Imagine Dragons and Lorde in the vote. Taylor Swift's international Red run was voted the Favorite Tour of the year, while Lollapalooza and "The X Factor" won for the year's best festival and musical TV show, respectively. And although we had to remove Beyonce from one of our categories -- "Beyonce Does Not Release An Album in 2013" certainly still can't be an option in the Biggest Disappointment vote! -- Queen Bey gave the Festival Performance of the year at Made In America, while she and Jay Z were voted the Hottest Couple of 2013.
Check out the full results below -- including the percentage of the votes that each candidate received:

Analysis: How Lady Gaga, Katy Perry And Rihanna Came To Dominate Top 40 Radio

A pure pop boom coincides with the Pop Songs radio airplay chart's two-decade anniversary.

Happy birthday, Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs chart! Two decades in, the ranking continues to track the trends at, and reveal the realities of, U.S. mainstream top 40 radio.

The chart's 20th anniversary - it launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992 - also coincides with an unprecedented pure pop boom, as mainstream top 40 radio is playing more pure pop than ever before. And, as station ratings soar, such a focus on the format's musical middle ground is reinforcing that the format works best when deemphasizing such extremes as rock and rap.

A year-by-year analysis of Billboard's Pop Songs chart reveals that pure pop - i.e., melodic, often synth-driven, uptempo fare from the likes of Kelly ClarksonLady Gaga and Katy Perry - has made up at least 60% of the survey's total top 10 hits each year from 2008 through 2012 (from January through July annually). Last year, the style accounted for a whopping 79% of the list's top 10s - the highest percentage in the chart's history - as 30 of the 38 top 10s during that period fit a pop classification.

This week, Chart Beat is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay chart.

Today, Oct. 2: Analysis: How Lady Gaga, Katy Perry And Rihanna Came To Dominate Top 40 Radio

Tomorrow, Oct. 3: The Top 100 Pop Songs 1992-2012, From No. 100 To No. 1

Thursday, Oct. 4: The Top 40 Pop Artists 1992-2012, From No. 40 To No. 1

What's behind the pure pop boom? It's no coincidence that 2008 marked the arrival of two of the format's reigning stars: Perry and Gaga. Rihanna, meanwhile, continued to solidify her star status as an almost constant chart staple, adding touches of R&B and reggae to her overall pop focus. Add the continued domination or resurgences in that span of such acts asChristina Aguilera, Clarkson, Maroon 5 (which, in recent years, has segued from rock to a more pop lean), P!nk and Britney Spears, and it's clear that pop became tops at mainstream top 40 radio.

In turn, ratings have reflected that audiences' appetites for pop are robust. CBS Radio flipped KAMP Los Angeles and WXRK New York to mainstream top 40 in 2009, taking on respective Clear Channel Media and Entertainment-owned format leaders KIIS and WHTZ. In Arbitron's August 2012 ratings among listeners ages 6 and older, KIIS led all Los Angeles stations with a 5.5 share, while KAMP pulled a 3.8 share. In New York in August, WHTZ registered a 6.1 share, while WXRK scored a 2.4 showing.

Similar battles brew in other large markets. In Detroit and Boston, CBS Radio has likewise switched WDZH (also in 2009) and WODS (two months ago) to mainstream top 40, again challenging established Clear Channel-owned format outlets WKQI and WXKS, respectively.

Programmers' adherence to, and the availability of, pure pop music at the format has ebbed and flowed since Billboard premiered Pop Songs, born of then-new BDS electronic monitoring technology, 20 years ago. (Ironically, given its title, Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" led the inaugural list. Current No. 1 "One More Night" by Maroon 5 is the chart's 252nd topper.)

While pure pop has comprised more than 60% of all Pop Songs top 10s each year since 2008, the sound encompassed just 41% in 1993, when R&B from the likes of Whitney HoustonJanet Jackson and TLC infused format playlists.

In 1996, pop accounted for just 19% of all top 10s, as such rock/alternative acts as Gin BlossomsHootie & the Blowfish and Alanis Morissette became the format's - and the public's - flavor of choice.

And, in 2003, pop's percentage rose to 45%, but the amount of rap top 10s doubled to 12 from the previous year, too. The heyday of 50 Cent, Diddy and Eminem at pop radio contrasted with 1993-2002, when no more than one rap title reached the top 10 annually.

Since 2008, however, Rihanna has reigned with 15 more top 10s after "Umbrella," Gaga's implored us to just dance (while racking seven Pop Songs No. 1s) and Perry's tallied a record six Pop Songs No. 1s from one album ("Teenage Dream"). And, she, um, kissed a girl. Clearly, we've liked it all.

According to Edison Research VP of music and programming Sean Ross, several factors have aligned to make for a current pinnacle for pop music. "There's less competition. R&B/hip-hop and alternative don't have the [ratings] influence that they used to, or, thus, the same ability to force songs on top 40's agenda. Only country has a similar ability to break new music and it's still viewed by most pop PDs as another sphere."

Ross adds that mainstream top 40 has learned to cultivate its own versions of rock and R&B-influenced pop, allowing the format to sample variety without risking playing extremes. In recent years, he notes, the format largely replaced hip-hop with rhythmic pop from such acts as theBlack Eyed Peas. Teen punk similarly usurped alternative at top 40, thanks to the rise of bands like the All-American Rejects. "Plus, R&B acts like Chris Brown and Usher are releasing exclusive pop singles for top 40 while saving their core R&B singles for that format," says Ross (who served as Billboard's radio editor in 1988-92).

While the names have changed - Peter Cetera, En Vogue, Guns N' Roses, Elton John and Toad the Wet Sprocket inhabited the maiden Pop Songs chart; Miley Cyrus wasn't born until a month after the list's launch;Justin Bieber, a year and a half later - the survey continues to help guide pop programmers' decisions. "The Pop Songs chart came along at point when country and hip-hop were competing heavily with the format," Ross recalls. "It gave mainstream top 40 PDs their own chart to look at.

Katy Perry Eats, Prays and Loves on Spiritual Journey

Katy Perry

Katy Perry is a woman of many mysteries: Where does she keep the canisters of whipped cream in those whipped cream-shooting bras? Why is she dating bad boy John Mayer(though we have our guesses)?
And now: What mysterious Eat, Pray, Love-esque trip is she on?!
The "California Gurls" songstress has spent the past few days tweeting her adventuresabroad, starting with a cryptic: "I can feel the phoenix rising."
"Starting the day with a group meditate#breakfastofchampions," Katy continued, before getting sassy and spiritual: "Getting some s--t out my chakra's!#eloquent"
No word yet on what inspired Katy's journey or where in the world she happens to be (or whether her new beau John is with her), but wherever she is, that phoenix inside might be ready to...erupt?
"I ate, I prayed, I climbed a volcano," she wrote. Just make sure you don't get too close to the edge, girl!

Katy Perry's Lil Bro Hudson Would Like to Be a Pop Star Too

About a year ago, Katy Perry's younger brother David Hudson, 24, decided to get into music. She was as surprised as the rest of us, it seems, but the little fella with the big gruff voice has stuck with it. He released his Dirty Face EP to iTunes on August 2, and now he's got himself a video for the song, "To You."
The song itself is an adult contemporary-flavored pop track with epic emo overtones. Not bad — just very vanilla, especially compared to the candy-coated smorgasbord that is his sister's oeuvre. And the video's kinda clever — a loop that finds Hudson offering his heart to an unimpressed mistress who tosses it aside before he catches it and repeats the process — even if it's in need of color correction and an audio fix.
Also to be appreciated is the presumably unintentional career metaphor of Hudson struggling in an uphill battle to reach his goal before he winds up dragging his own damn self through the dirt. A preemptive strike, perhaps? Finally, that chick should be a quarterback the way she tosses that heart-shaped rock. Oh, and one of Hudson's most recent Twitter updates:"Boobies. #GodBlessThatCreation"

Katy Perry And John Mayer Seen Together, Romance Not Over After All

Katy Perry and John Mayer

Katy Perry and John Mayer enjoyed a whirlwind romance that appeared to come to an end a week ago, but new pictures of the couple out together suggest that it might not be over after all.

The duo was seen getting very close at a FYF concert in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, E! Newsreported. Katy Perry and John Mayer were seen rocking in the VIP section of the music festival, dancing closely and sharing kisses while watching acts like Purity Ring, Sleigh Bells, and M83 perform, a source told E! News.
Katy Perry wore a floral print dress to the concert, and the cowboy-hat-wearing John Mayer was seen with her arms around her at one point. Their get-together was spotted by one of Perry’s fans, who uploaded a picture to Instagram of the couple smiling with a group of friends.
The pair started spending lots of time together in early and mid August, with spottings at a Hollywood Hills pool party and reports that Katy Perry was spotted leaving Mayer’s house after a sleepover.
Katy Perry has also been busy with other relationships during her on-again off-again time with John Mayer. She allegedly offered a place to stay for newly single Robert Pattinson, fresh off of his split with Kristen Stewart,Sugarscape reported. The pair were actually spotted together, but now it appears it was never in a romantic way, as Perry and Mayer reportedly never broke up.
“Things have been going well and speaking of never breaking up, they consider what they have as strictly dating and in no way exclusive and they both have made the decision to have fun with each other and not make anything super serious,” a source told Hollywood Life.
The source went on to add that for Katy Perry and John Mayer, they have “more of a physical relationship then a ‘falling-in-love’ relationship.”

Pop Stars In Nude Bodysuits: Trend Or Foe?

Is she naked onstage? No, it's just another double-taking nude bodysuit! At the 2000 MTV VMAs, a 19-year-old Britney Spears shocked audiences when she stripped off her clothes to reveal little more than rhinestones and nude fabric. (Admit it, it took you a good few moments to realize there was fabric). Now, more than a decade after Britney's wardrobe trickery, the nude bodysuit has returned full-force on the pop star scene. Are these new renditions of Spears's VMAs look a pop trend or pop foe?

Britney Spears Nude Body
Behold, the original sparkly nude look! Britney Spears sizzled the rhinestones off her incredible body with an unbelievably sexy performance of "Oops...I Did It Again" at the 2000 MTV VMAs, proving once and for all that the bubblegum singer was "not that innocent."

Pink Nude Body
A decade after Britney Spears's VMAs outfit shocker, Pink flaunted her Olympics-worthy body in a look that mated Britney's nude VMAs getup and Cher's "Turn Back Time" barely-there electrician's tape outfit for her death-defying, aerial performance at the 2010 Grammys. Again, rhinestones seem to be the only thing keeping the singer from being completely exposed, but given the gymnastic emphasis of her act, a skin-tight bodysuit was a must!...

Jennifer Lopez Nude Body
Singer Jennifer Lopez bedazzled her unmentionables at the 2011 American Music Awards, thus garnering immediate comparisons to Spears's look. Britney and Pink at least had straps and/or flared pants to make their outfit look more, well, there, but Lopez's outfit left very little to the imagination.

Mel B nude body
Mel B of the Spice Girls was slightly more covered-up than previous nude bodysuits, rocking one that had a more even, less "strategic" spattering of sequins at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony

Jessie J nude body
Here's a two-fer! British pop star Jessie J rocked not one, but two nude bodysuits at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony in London. Probably the most "covered" of all the bodysuit-flaunters here, the singer started with a nude leotard adorned with black flowers, then moved on to a bodysuit that was half nude fabric and half nude-tinted sequins

Katy Perry Nude Body
And now for the nudest of the nude suits! Katy Perry was caught off-guard when she won an award at Canada's 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards immediately after her performance, with no time for an outfit change. The singer quipped that had she known she'd win, she would've worn more clothes! Ironically, her award statue looked like a black censor bar, and Katy appropriately used it to cover her behind as she scurried offstage!

Katy Perry Wide Awake Lyrics And Official Video

"Wide Awake"
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I'm wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong?
I'm wide awake
And now it's clear to me
That everything you see
Ain't always what it seems
I'm wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud 9
Crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud 9

I'm wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I'm wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no

I'm wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Out of the lion's den
I don't have to pretend
And it's too late
The story's over now, the end

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn't dive in
Wouldn't bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
'Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud 9 (it was out of the blue)
I'm crashing from the high
I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud 9

I'm wide awake
Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
I'm wide awake
I am trying to hold on
I'm wide awake
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
I'm wide awake
But I'm not blind anymore...

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

[Chorus]
Yeah, I'm falling from cloud 9 (it was out of the blue)
I'm crashing from the high
You know I'm letting go tonight (yeah, I'm letting you go)
I'm falling from cloud 9

I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake
I'm wide awake

Katy Perry Tries Orange Hair On Cover Of 'L'Officiel'

Katy Perry on the cover of "L'Officiel" magazine.
Photo: Courtesy of L'Officiel
Has Katy Perry officially (or *achem* L'Officiel-ly *ba dum TSH*) rounded out the hair rainbow yet? The orange hair she's sporting for the cover (and inside spread!) of L'Officielmagazine has to put her pretty close, right? Throughout the course of the last 365 days, we've seen Katy Perry go from pink to a brief flirtation with blonde only to go back to pinkthen to BLUE then purple and now she's back to trusty old black. BUT nowhere in that sequence of hair colors did we see Katy rock this particular shade of naranja. And the texture of her hair looks kinda natural, as in maybe not a wig! What gives?
Well, we don't have any answers, but we have some conjectures! Perhaps it was, in fact, a wig, and our untrained eyes and the convenient masking of her part with the title line made it difficult to spot, camouflaged it in a way. Or maybe this was taken at a stage between one of her many color switch-ups. You know how you often have to even out a tone before adding new colors into the mix? *shrugs* Or maybe, and stay with us on this one, it's PHOTOSHOPPED! *takes deeeeeeeep dramatic gasp* I know, it's a little far-fetched, but the technology is deffffinitely out there for the mag to have seamlessly transformed Katy's mane into the ginger-spectacular we see before us. What do you think of Katy Perry's orange hair for L'Officiel?

Katy Perry Turns Down $20 Million American Idol Job Offer!

it’s not everyday that someone turns down a $20 million paycheck, but Katy Perry has reportedly done just that.

The Wide Awake singer has snubbed an offer to join Mariah Carey on the American Idoljudging panel, according to multiple media outlets.

Apparently the show’s producers were so keen to get the California Gurl that they offered her $2 million more than Carey who’s the highest paid judge on a TV show in that genre.

If she accepted the offer the heart-stopping sum would have been just for a one-year contract.

But it seems that the 27-year-old Teenage Dream singer, who recently split from lady killer John Mayer, [] has no desire to be on the successful TV show.
American Idol executives are scrambling to fill the judging panel that has several vacancies since Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler announced their departure earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Randy Jackson -- who has been a judge since the show first aired ten years ago -- has decided to become a mentor instead.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported,  rapper Nicki Minaj is rumored to be in talks to join the show. So too is Alanis Morissette and pop star Nick Jonas.
